Conceived as an experiential terrain amidst the lush tropical environs of Borneo, this Pool Terrace acts as a topographic playground for dogs to play and swim, while also acting as a versatile hangout spot for their human companions.
The design was conceived by Archigardener for BarkPark Borneo, a private dog park in Kuching, the capital of the Malaysian state of Sarawak, which describes itself as ‘a canine paradise where all your dog’s needs are met under one woof’. This exceptional park features off-leash dog runs, swimming pools, an agility course, a dog-friendly cafe, boarding & daycare facilities, a training school, and even a pet shop, along with community initiatives like a dog rescue facility, ‘furry soup kitchen’ and a stray neutering program.
This private initiative is critical for dogs and owners in Malaysia, where as a majority Muslim country with religious sensitivities, dogs are disallowed in all public spaces including roadsides, public parks and nature reserves. As a result, local dogs often remain confined to residential premises, and many have never had the opportunity to swim, play off-leash, or experience nature.
Inspired by the designer’s experiences at Australian nature reserves, where his dog and others delight in jumping and climbing on natural formations, the Pool Terrace was thoughtfully crafted to offer an engaging journey where dogs can leap, play, and explore different vantage points, leading up to a prefabricated above-ground pool. Seat-height steps provide not only a hangout spot for dogs and their people, but also a mini-amphitheater for events. At the base, a bench loop offers a delightful space for people to sit and bond with their dogs.
Nestled at one corner of the park, this structure serves as a bookend, anchoring and defining the park. Planters at either end act as safety barriers, softened by tropical greenery, framing the space. Graceful shade sails provide shelter from the tropical sun. Atop the terrace, a pool deck adorned with a slide, ramp, and panoramic vistas back across the park invites ‘pawsome’ pool parties!
