Since the time of the Roman Pantheon (43.4 meter diameter), domed structures have captivated the imagination. Since 2013, Singapore’s National Stadium has held the record for largest dome in the world with an incredible 310 meter span!
The steel truss structure features the world’s largest retractable roof. The stadium seats are coloured in a pixellated pattern that is intended to make the stands look full even when only partially occupied.
The stadium is open on one side, using Singapore’s skyline as a backdrop.
The stadium is sited on the site of Singapore’s old Kallang Airport, which was a circular aerodrome that was eventually replaced by Changi Airport.
The sleek modernist terminal of the old Kallang Airport still sits unused next to the National Stadium (pictured below). In 1937, Amelia Earhart was among the airport’s first visitors, two weeks before her disappearance in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.
