Bali’s iconic Potato Head Beach Club has been expanding into a village of cool design. Joining the instagrammable shutter-covered structure are a beautiful brick hotel by legendary Indonesian architect Andra Matin, and a new Creative Centre by OMA.
They have also been adding sustainable art installations to the interstitial spaces between the buildings. My favourite work is ‘The Womb’ which was created by local artist and large-scale sculptor Nano Uhero.
Crafted entirely from woven bamboo (a locally sourced renewable material) without any mechanical fixings or glue, this installation has a high design impact but a light environmental footprint.
The Womb is a functional work of art, acting as an experiential arrival journey to the complex. Openly woven bamboo strips gently temper the tropical heat: casting beautiful filigree shadows, framing unique views, expanding and contracting to create a variety of spatial experiences along the journey.
