The futuristic new Singapore University of Technology and Design campus recently opened in eastern Singapore.
The educational component of the campus was designed by UNStudio in collaboration with DP Architects. The ‘8’ shaped building allows good connectivity while also providing tempered light and ventilation into the buildings through two internal courtyards.
Compared to the slick futuristic initial renderings of the project, the architectural execution looks a bit chunky. Some of the initial concepts do come through though and there are plenty of interesting moments within the complex.
The housing (staff & student) and sports component of the campus was designed by Look Architects.
The sports facility is an interesting faceted shape with an expanded metal mesh facade. The building folds up at one side to form seating stands for the track and field.
A series of splayed residential blocks are punctured and broken up by double height communal spaces for residents.
The campus also features four antique buildings imported from China, which were donated to the university by Jackie Chan (seriously)! The centuries old buildings were brought from China by sea and are inserted into the campus, contrasting interestingly with the contemporary setting.
