I’ve visited a lot of architect’s houses around the world, but the home of famed Australian architect Robin Boyd is definitely one of my favourites!
Boyd’s Walsh Street residence in Melbourne, Australia is now home to the Robin Boyd Foundation, which runs public tours and events in the building. The house plays a major part in Melbourne’s architectural history, and is a must visit for any architourist!
The house takes advantage of a sloping site to fit two intimately scaled components, a two storey public facing portion at the front, and a shorter block at the back that contains the bedrooms.
Both portions of the house face into a beautiful central courtyard, and are tied together by a lightwight catenary roof structure that encloses the space.
The bedrooms are simple but light filled, and furnished with elegantly designed custom furniture.
