Federation Square sits at the heart of Melbourne, taking advantage of air-rights above the city’s busy railway tracks. The building epitomises the chaotic architectural tectonics of Melbourne, with a fragmented facade and shard-like building forms. The deconstructivist building forms are used to carve out interstitial public spaces ranging from laneway-like shortcuts to a lively plaza. It’s an interesting case study in architecture catalysing contemporary civic life.
