I don’t think that many people know that Daniel Libeskind designed a building in Hong Kong, the Run Run Shaw Creative Media Centre located at the City University of Hong Kong in northern Kowloon, fairly far from the city centre.
Completed in 2010, the building is interesting because it evinces Libeskind’s signature fragmented deconstructivist style in a relatively simple building. Compared to some of his relatively more elaborate buildings with expensive finishes, this building is largely standard in construction with a painted facade and plastered interiors.
Although simple in materiality, the fractured forms of the building create dynamic interior spaces and dramatic circulation through an asymmetric atrium spiral staircase. The dramatic forms also create public spaces that engage with the surrounding university campus.
