“Right angles don’t attract me. Nor straight, hard and inflexible lines created by man. What attracts me are free and sensual curves. The curves we find in mountains, in the waves of the sea, in the body of the woman we love.”
Oscar Niemeyer The Curves of Time, 1998
At a ripe old age of 104, legendary modernist architect Oscar Niemeyer has finally passed away. A pioneer of modern architecture and contemporary of Lucio Costa and Le Corbusier, he will be sorely missed as a legendary architect and one of the last living links to the modernist movement.
I recently had the opportunity to visit one of his stunning sculptural structures, the Auditorium Oscar Niemeyer, a stunning performance venue perched at the top of a mountain along the stunning southern Italian Amalfi coast. The building is signature Niemeyer with sensual curves, dramatic spaces, and the architectural prowess of a master- and even more incredible when you realise that the building was conceived when he was nearly 100 years old. It’s truly a shame he won’t be producing any more of these masterpieces. Rest in peace.
