Went to visit Jeanne Gang’s new South Pond landscape & pavilion in Lincoln Park yesterday.
From a distance, there is a little utility box that is a big visual eyesore to the purity of the pavilion.
But the detailing of the wood deck ties the structure into the site quite well.
I thought the “turtle shell” bubbles might look a little cheezy in person but the quality seemed good, especially of the wood ribs and steel connection detail.
The rest of the Studio Gang project consists of a boardwalk around the other side of the pond.. as usual the detailing is good, although you can tell most of the money was used up by the time they re-created a ‘natural’ pond and marsh landscape, and built the pavilion.
The pavilion is great at night with a very simple but effective lighting system. A very nice detail seen above where the wood paneling bends upward to prevent glare in the elevation view of the pavilion, seen in action below:
